Clinical Outcomes of Difluprednate 0.05% for Treatment of Ocular Inflammation Associated With Cataract Surgery in Normal, Ocular Hypertensive, Glaucoma Suspect, and Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma Patients
Narrative Responses:
Purpose
To investigate the clinical outcomes for intraocular pressure after treatment with difluprednate 0.05% ophthalmic solutions qd in subjects who have undergone cataract extraction with uncomplicated posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation.
Methods
Twenty patients were recruited for each group: normal, ocular hypertensive, glaucoma suspect or primary open angle glaucoma who were undergoing uncomplicated phacoemulsification had IOP checked at baseline, pod1, 7, and 42 days after receiving difluprednate once daily on the day of surgery and 21 days postoperatively qd in addition to regular postoperative NSAID and antibiotic.
Results
Average age of study participants were similar ranging from 67.5-72.7 years. Baseline average iop in normals was 13.7, glcs 15.9, ohtn 19.5, and POAG 18.1 mm Hg. Average pod1 IOP ormals 13.5,glcs 19.3,ohtn 23.3, and poag 25.8. Change from baseline to pod1 normal -.2, glcs 3.4,ohtn 3.8, and POAG 7.7 mm Hg. Average POD7 IOP normals 15.4, glcs 19.4,ohtn 17.7, POAG 18.7. Average IOP at pod42 normals 14.7, glcs 17.5,ohtn 16.4, POAG 16. Change from baseline to pod42 normal 1, glc 2.6,ohtn, -3.1, poag-2.1 mm Hg.
Conclusion
Elevated IOPs with difluprednate have been reported in the early postoperative period. POAG patients responded with higher IOPs postoperatively compared to ohtn and glcs patients. Normal patients and glcs IOP remained stable throughout the trial. Ohtn and POAG patients had improved -3.1 and -2.1 mm Hg respectively) compared with baseline.
