First Application of New Preloaded Aspheric Hydrophobic IOL
Narrative Responses:
Purpose
To evaluate the first clinical outcomes among patients implanted with the new Preloaded Aspheric Hydrophobic intraocular lens (IOL) “Optimed” (Russia) during cataract surgery.
Methods
This is a prospective study of 52 patients (53 eyes) with mean age of 68±14.6 years followed for 1 month after implantation of the new Preloaded Aspheric Hydrophobic IOL “Optimed” (Russia) during phacoemulsification. Phacoemulsification procedures were performed by 4 surgeons. The main measures were orientation of the leading haptic on insertion, the degree of intrawound manipulation of the injector, best corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure, postoperative reaction on IOL, postoperative surface quality of IOL, presence of glistening, postoperative IOL position in the capsular bag, patient satisfaction survey, and surgeon satisfaction survey.
Results
Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) improved in all 53 eyes (100%). The BCVA 1 month after surgery was 0.9-1.0 in 38.4% cases, 0.7-0.8 in 30.8% cases, 0.5-0.6 in 7.7% cases, 0.3-0.4 in 15.4% cases, 0.1-0.2 in 7.7%. The reasons of decreased BCVA were coexisting age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. Transient intraocular hypertension was observed in 16.7% cases. Postoperative reactions on IOL, IOL surface damage, presence of glistening, haptic breakage were not observed. The IOL position in the capsular bag was stable. The leading haptic wasn't tucked in 32.1% cases, which required additional rotational manipulation of an injector.
Conclusion
The results suggest that the new Preloaded Aspheric Hydrophobic IOL “Optimed” provides good visual outcomes, IOL stability in the capsular bag, convenience and safety of preloaded system.
