Combined PRK and CXL in Management of Mild to Moderate Keratoconus: 3-18 Month Results
Narrative Responses:
Purpose
To present the results of 103 eyes of 57 patients with mild to moderate keratoconus who underwent combined therapy with Photo Refractive Keratectomy [PRK] and Corneal Crosslinking [CXL] in mild to moderate keraoconus.
Methods
103 eyes of 57 patients with mild to moderate keratoconus were treated with PRK followed by CXL in same sitting during last 18 months. The mean pre-operative K was 50.20+/- 3.50D. In all cases the post-operative residual stromal thickness was greater than 300microns. cases with less corneal thickness were under corrected and treated with tissue saving alog. Mitomycin C was applied to cornea in all patients after PRK to reduce stromal haze.
Results
All patients achieved post-operative UCVA /BCVA [in under corrected patients] equal to pre-operative BCVA over a period of 3 to 6 months. The mean reduction in K reading was 3.50D+/-1.60D.
Conclusion
Results of our case series strongly suggest that CXL with PRK achieves two goals of stabilizing the cone and visual rehabilitation in cases of keratoconus.
