Purpose
Clinical evaluation on the safety and efficacy of a LASIK-based presbyopic treatment in post-LASIK patients.

Methods
Single site, prospective study on 31 post-LASIK patients undergoing a LASIK treatment for presbyopia. The flap was lifted and a presbyopic LASIK treatment (Supracor; Bausch + Lomb Technolas) was performed in one eye and the fellow eye was left untreated. The eye with the worse uncorrected distance vision or if both eyes had the same distance vision, the non-dominant eye was selected for treatment. Uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity, refraction and patient satisfaction were measured over a 6 month post-operative period. Target refraction was -0.5D.

Results
The mean patient age was 50.7 years. The group comprised 15 hyperopic, 5 myopic, 5 emmetropic and 6 mixed astigmatism eyes. Pre-op manifest refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE) was 0.16±0.67D and was -0.40±0.59D at 6 months follow-up. Mean monocular uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) improved from J5/J6 to J1/J2, with 63% of patients seeing J1. There was also an improvement in monocular uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA), from 26% at 20/20 pre-operatively to 59% at 20/20 at 6 months postop, whilst monocular uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) was maintained. Patient satisfaction was high with 96% recommending the procedure.

Conclusion
Results find the LASIK procedure effectively improves near vision in presbyopicpost-LASIK patients, whilst also improving intermediate vision and maintaining distance vision.
