Visual Outcomes After Bilateral or Unilateral Implantation of Nonrotational Dual-Optic Bi-Aspheric IOL
Narrative Responses:
Purpose
To evaluate visual outcomes, higher order optical aberrations and patient reported results after sequential bilateral or non-sequential unilateral ocular implantation with the Lenstec SBL-3 dual-optic intraocular lens (IOL).
Methods
Thirty-three eyes in 18 patients were implanted with the Lenstec Model SBL-3 one piece, dual-optic bi-aspheric IOL. Visual acuity (VA) was assessed at distance, intermediate (60cm), and near (40cm). Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), manifest spherical refractive error (MSRE), and patient satisfaction were also recorded at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months postoperatively. Postoperative higher-order optical aberrations were measured using iTrace ray tracing wavefront aberrometer.
Results
Postoperatively, at 2 weeks, mean UDVA, UIVA, UNVA, BCVA was 20/30, 20/36, 20/27, and 20/24, respectively. MRSE was -0.33D+/-0.48[SD]. At 3 months, higher-order aberrations of coma, trefoil, tetrafoil, penatfoil and hexafoil showed relatively low threshold values (square root mean < 0.2). Mean subjective scores of glare (2.4), reduced night vision (1.6), depth perception (0.3), halos (1.9), distance vision (0.8), and near vision (0.5) were recorded via questionnaire (using a severity scale out of 5). At 6 months, mean UDVA, UIVA, UNVA, BCVA was 20/21, 20/19, 20/19, and 20/21, respectively. MRSE was +0.10D+/-0.26[SD]. Overall patient satisfaction scored high at 8.2/10.
Conclusion
VA of SBL-3 dual-optic IOL performed well at all ranges tested, with best results at near/reading. MRSE data demonstrated a small hyperopic shift (0.43D) over 6 months. Quantifiable aberrometry of the SBL-3 lens demonstrate minimal HO aberrations. Initial findings demonstrate excellent visual outcomes and good overall patient satisfaction for SBL-3.
