Visual Outcomes of Diffractive Multifocal Toric IOL
Narrative Responses:
Purpose
To evaluate the visual outcome and rotational stability outcomes of a diffractive multifocal toric intraocular lens (IOL) in patients undergoing cataract surgery with corneal astigmatism.
Methods
This study comprised patients with cataract and corneal astigmatism between 1.50 diopter (D) and 3.50 D who had phacoemulsification with implantation of an AMO Tecnis toric multifocal IOL. Over a 3-month follow-up, the main outcome measures were uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA) at 80 cm, uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) at 40 cm, spherical equivalent (SE) refraction, residual astigmatism, and rotational stability of the IOL.
Results
The study included 10 eyes (10 patients). Predictability of refractive results was very good, with an SE refraction within ± 0.50 D of the attempted spherical correction in 9 eyes (90%). The mean toric IOL axis rotation was 3.24 ± 1.33 degrees.
Conclusion
Results of this pilot study reveals that implantation of the Tecnis diffractive multifocal toric IOL in patients with cataract and corneal astigmatism provided excellent distance, intermediate, and near visual outcomes allowing all patients to achieve complete spectacle independence. . Implantation of this IOL also revealed excellent rotational stability in all cases.
