Narrative Responses:

Purpose
To assess the efficacy of placing ProKera Slim (BioTissue) following superficial keratectomy (SuperK), in terms of rate of re-epithelialization, corneal clarity, visual recovery, pain control, and avoidance of adverse events such infection and scarring versus standard bandage contact lens (BCL).

Methods
This is an IRB-approved case control study to compare the wound healing outcomes following placement of ProKera Slim versus BCL, in patients undergoing superficial keratectomy for epithelial basement membrane dystrophy or Salzmann’s nodular degeneration. Ten patients with bilateral disease requiring SuperK were followed for 1 month after the Prokera Slim was placed in one eye for one week, with the fellow eye receiving a BCL for one week. Patients were evaluated at Day 3, 5, 7 and Month 1 following treatment to track rate of re-epithelialization, corneal clarity, visual acuity and pain control.
