Cataract Surgery in Patients With Congenital Iris Coloboma

Purpose
To assess the results of lens replacement surgery in patients with congenital iris coloboma
Methods
19 patients (25 eyes) with cataracts of various densities underwent clear corneal phacoemulsification, IOL implantation followed by iridoplasty utilizing Siepser sliding knot suture(s).
Results
In 3 cases modified CTR was sutured to the sclera at 6 o’clock position. In 3 cases intraoperative pupil centration was performed with radiofrequency applications to the midperiphery of the iris. In 1 case argon-laser pupilloplasty was performed 3 months postop. Preoperative BCVA (Snellen) 0.08 +/- 0.06 improved to 0.72 +/- 0.21. Mean follow-up period was 18 months.
Conclusion
In patients with congenital iris coloboma, phacoemulsification with in-the-bag IOL implantation followed by this pupilloplasty technique provided acceptable functional and cosmetic results.
