Moderate and High Myopia Correction Using Transepithelial PRK Treatment (Presented in Russian)

Purpose
Clinical outcomes in terms of predictability, refraction, vision, safety and contrast sensitivity among moderate and high myopic patients, who underwent a surface treatment with laser epithelial removing were analyzed.

Methods
Sixty cases with a mean pre-op SEQ of -7.14 D (range -4.0 D up to -10.0 D) and a mean decimal visual acuity of 0.98 (range 0.8 to 1.0) were planned as TransPRK treatments by the CAM software (both Schwind Eye tech Solutions) with the excimer laser epithelial removal and correcting the refractive error within a single step. In all patients Mitomycin C post laser ablation has been carried out. For ablation the Schwind AMARIS with 500 Hz pulse frequency had been used in conjunction of a 5 D eye-tracker and static cyclotorsion compensation.

Results
At the time of submission not all eyes had completed the 6-month post-operative cycle. However the 6 months follow up showed that 50% of eyes were within ±0.25D and 79% within ±0.50D. Mean preop BCVA was 0.98 and mean postop UCVA was 0.97 whereas 100% achieved an UCVA of 0.8 and 78% an UCVA of 1.0. Postoperative contrast sensitivity at moderate spatial frequency was better than the preoperative. Epithelial closing was in 72% within 3 days and latest within 5 days.

Conclusion
Transepithelial surface treatment is a procedure with a minimum discomfort for the patient. It provides a quick healing, minimal corneal syndrome and comparable refractive with LASIK results. Superior results up for myopia -10 D in the spherical equivalent provided no side effects and haze remained under degree 0.5.
