Scheimpflug tomography has become an essential piece of the puzzle, when it comes to treatment planning and postoperative evaluation in all those procedures. The talk will focus on clinical and scientific applications of the Pentacam® HR Scheimpflug topographer at the Department of Ophthalmology of the Goethe-University in Frankfurt, Germany. Pre LASIK keratoconus screening for ectasia prevention will be covered, but also anterior chamber evaluations for phakic lens implantation. In terms of refractive lens exchange and refractive cataract surgery it will highlight options for lens densitometry assessment and especially the use of evaluating total corneal refractive power (TCRP) instead of SimK values only, to plan any kind of astigmatic treatment, from arcuate incisions to toric lenses.

Improving Cataract Surgery Outcomes with the OCULUS Pentacam® HR - H. John Shammas, MD

The Pentacam® HR plays a major role in the pre-operative cataract evaluation, especially when a Premium IOL is being considered. The Pentacam® HR assists the surgeon by providing valuable information on the following:

  •     Anterior segment analysis with an evaluation of the cornea, anterior chamber and cataract density.
  •     Corneal topography with corneal power measurement from a sagittal power map, a true net power map and a total corneal power map. The best values for IOL power calculation will be discussed.
  •     Precise astigmatism calculation (cylinder amount and axis) by taking into consideration the astigmatism from the anterior and posterior corneal surfaces.
  •     Assessment of the corneal optical quality by evaluating the corneal spherical aberrations and any corneal irregular astigmatism.
