Purpose
To evaluate the outcomes using a new low energy femtosecond laser for cataract surgery.

Methods
A prospective study using a low energy femtosecond laser (Z8, Ziemer) to perform a laser-assisted capsulotomy and lens fragmentation was performed in 49 eyes. Liquid optics interface system and Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT) was used. As well success and complications rate was documented.

Results
Forty nine eyes had the femtosecond laser procedure. Laser-assisted capsulotomies were significantly accurate and precise (intended diameter, circularity, centration), anterior capsular tear occurred in 2 cases (4.08 %), posterior capsule tears in 2.04 % (1 case) The mean effective phaco time (EPT) was (4.2 seconds ± 3.7 [SD]).

Conclusion
This low energy femtosecond laser platform was effective and safe in cataract surgery, reducing EPT during lens fragmentation and providing precise and reproducible capsulotomies.
