Comparison of Outcomes of Aspheric Ablations of Myopic Treatments With Astigmatism Dominance Versus Myopic Treatments With Spherical Dominance
There are many independent factors that influence the outcome of refractive surgeries, consisting of patient characteristics and environmental factors. We compared the outcomes of two subtle different populations receiving myopic treatments with astigmatism dominance vs. myopic treatments with spherical dominance.
A total of 531 patients treated at Muscat Eye Laser Center, Oman, using the AMARIS running at 1050Hz and including a predictive 7D eye-tracking subsystem were evaluated from January 2014 to January 2015 in a retrospective cross-sectional study. The relevant data were registered and bivariate correlations and linear regression association were investigated statistically.
Eyes with spherical dominance had a better preoperative CDVA (1±4letter better, p<0,0001) as well as a better postoperative UDVA (1±7letter better, p<0,05), but not in postop CDVA as well as the change in UDVA or CDVA. As expected, attempted and achieved SE was different (1,44±1,92D and 1,74±2,41D difference, respectively, p<0,0001), but the postop SE was not statistically different. As expected, preop astigmatism was different (1,43±0,99D, p<0,0001), but the postop astigmatism was not. The planned optical zone was slightly smaller for eyes with spherical dominance (-0,2±0,4mm smaller, p<0,0001).
The outcomes of two subtle different populations receiving myopic treatments with astigmatism dominance vs. myopic treatments with spherical dominance were comparable. The detected differences affected only planned OZ. Other observed differences were observed preoperatively, but the effect of the treatment was comparable in both groups. The treatment with eyes with spherical or astigmatism dominance does not seem to affect the outcomes.
