There are 2 types of IOL opacification: Calcification,  which degrades visual function significantly, and glistening and sub-surface nano glistening, which  cause mild reduction of visual function. Thus, calcification requires IOL exchange immediately, but glistening and sub-surface nano glistening do not require immediate surgery. It is important to know the type of IOL opacification to decide whether to perform an IOL exchange.
