Purpose
To investigate an intra-operative applanation lens to be able to predict the size of the flap and the size of the hinge.

Methods
Using the AMARIS Schwind Excimer Laser and the Carriazo Pendular Microkeratome , 25 patients with Myopia, Myopic astigmatism and Hyperopia were studied. The flap was created with the help of Ring 9 and Ring 10 with 130 micron head. An applanation lens was used once the suction ring was applied. The applanated area was noted and the flap was created.

Results
This applanation lens is fantastic tool to be able to predict the size of the hinge, size of the flap, and at times even the position of the flap. Once the flap was lifted this image was super-imposed with amount of applanated area to know if the same matched or not. This technique was quite accurate and reproducible over the wider range of keratometric readings.

Conclusion
The PMMA block with 2 rings is a good method to be able to predict the size of the ring and the flap before creating one
