Purpose
This study investigates the use of post-operative near vision instruction to facilate adaptation to a multi-focal IOL

Methods
20 Patients who were bilaterally implanted with multifocal lens and dissatisfied with their near vision were randomly divided into two groups. The first group of 10 patients were allowed to use a rear-illuminated board with variable brightness to train themself to see and identify the near image. The second group were encouraged to train their reading with a similar size reading board without rear-illumination

Results
All patients percieved an improvement in their near vision. Group 1 patients who used the illuminated board achieved a 3.8 line improvement in near vision, while those in group 2 improved only 2.3 lines. This was statistically significant.

Conclusion
These results suggest the value of faciliating near vision work in patients who are "slow-adapters" to multi-focal technology.
